The National Health Research Forum (NHRF) is an annual scientific conference organized by the Lao Tropical and Public Health Institute in collaboration with its national and international research institutions namely the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) of Kyoto, Japan; the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM) of Tokyo, Japan; the EU LEARN – MCNV; the JICA – SATREPS at Lao Pasteur Institute; the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute; UNFPA; and other national and international research collaborators.


In pursuance with the success of the 11th NHRF, the 12th NHRF will be held for 2 days (16 – 17 October 2018 at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Vientiane Capital.  This scientific conference is presided over by Dr. Sengchang Kounnavong, Director General of Lao Tropical and Public Health Institute(Lao TPHI) on behalf of Minister of Health. In the meeting there are some co chairs 1. H. E Leo Faber, EU Embassador, Prof. Norihiro Kokudo President of NCGM, Japan, Prof. Peter Odermatt from Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, and Prof. Dr. Shikeyuki Kano head of Lao-Japan Lab, Institute Pasteur of Lao PDR. The theme will center to importance of health research system strengthening that in turn, will contributing to achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), and elimination of some communicable diseases (CD) by 2025.


The forum aims at providing a platform for presenting new research findings and innovation of research works related to health researches, health economic, development of health human resources and health information system; for sharing and learning best practices of research skills between national and international researchers; for strengthening and enhancing research networking within and between countries; for providing evidence for policy makers in decision making; for conducting an in-country sector policy dialogue in preparation for achievement of mid-term health sector reform as a part of SDG implementation with the intention of ensuring the health system improvement; and establishing effective linkages between the higher decision making level, public health institutions, relevant non-health sectors, health aids agencies, and civil society organizations.


180 participants both local and international will attend this forum including Chairs, Co-Chairs, and speakers for presentations; experts; and researchers. The 12th health forum will concentrate in discussion of the following areas: lessons learned and implications of ongoing financial management reform of the Lao PDR Universal Health Coverage at facility level; liver cancer in Japan and Asia Pacific region; a multi sectorial priority of Non-Communicable diseases in Asia Pacific region; and combating cholangiocarcinoma in Southeast Asia region; research results strengthening health education and containing of malaria and other parasitic diseases expanding endemicity; SDG 2: Zero hunger – evidence contributing to ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture in Laos; cholangiocarcinoma: a preventable killer; research providing evidence inform policy; vaccine preventable diseases – major global health problem; and mosquito borne diseases.


It is expected that the 12th NHRF will draw together the Lao and international health researchers, epidemiologists, social scientists, health economists, practitioners, and experts in health research development to share passion for exchanging best practices in different fields of health researches. Additionally, the forum will provide a unique platform as an opportunity to start an in-country sector policy dialogue on how best the health research system has strengthened, enhanced, and accelerated the Lao health sector reform by 2025, ensuring the UHC, control of NCD, and elimination of CD.  Incidentally, the 12th NHRF will launch effective linkages between the higher decision making level, public health institutions, relevant non-health sectors, health aids agencies, and civil society organizations.
